I’ve never heard of the Church of the Nazarene. Is it new?
The Nazarene denomination is a Protestant Christian church that began in 1895 by a man named Phineas F. Bresee who was a pastor, evangelist, and educator. The Nazarene church was and is a part of the Wesleyan-Holiness movement.
How will I be recieved on my first visit to the church?
We will welcome you with open arms (we are a friendly church)! Conversation usually is that of a warm hello and some friendly conversation. We would love to hear about how you found us and anything else you'd like to share, but, of course, only sharing whatever makes you comfortable. We look forward to meeting you!
What does a typical service look like?
If you would like to preview a service of ours, you can check out our live streams on FB and YouTube. After that, we would absolutely love to have you join us in person so that we could get to meet you! We really emphasize in-person community worship, living, and practice - so we definitely encourage in-person attendance so that we can all know each other and work together in serving God as the body of Christ.
How do I know my kids will be safe in your church?
Schenectady Church of the Nazarene works with Ministry Safe. All of our children's workers have been background checked and trained on safety procedures in order to keep your child safe. We are so excited to have a new space for a Children's Church Ministry and look forward to having your family worship with us!
Do I have to give the church money?
There is no requirement for giving. Tithes and offerings are an act of worship that is between the believer and God.
We do believe that people who choose to become committed members of the church (having taken a membership class and gone through the process to become a member) would contribute to the support of the ministry and the church and its work through tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:10; Luke 6:38; 1 Corinthians 9:14; 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:6–10; Philippians 4:15–19). If you have more questions about this please contact the pastor.
Do I have to sing, pray out loud, or read anything in front of people?
We are so happy you have chosen to worship with us and see what we are about. You are our guest and we would like for you to feel comfortable, so, of course, none of this is required. If you decide to become a committed attender or member you are invited to meet with the pastor to see where you have gifts and graces to serve God in the church.
Do I need to join right away, or can I think about it?
All are invited to attend, membership is not a requirement in the Church of the Nazarene. We do encourage membership as a way of showing commitment and the pastor is available to meet with anyone who is interested in taking a membership class and learning more about what it means to be a member of the church.
